Beldur Barik: awareness-raising and prevention programmeon gender violence

The “Beldur Barik awareness-raising programme on gender violence around 25N”, funded by Vitoria‐Gasteiz City Council, aims to prevent gender violence among young people. It is promoted by the institutions of the Basque Country Autonomous Community, and its main objective is to encourage reflection and debate on sexist violence among young people in order to contribute to the transformation of a sexist society into an egalitarian one.

Objectives

  • To boost youth participation through the development and running of the inter-institutional Beldur Barik programme.
  • To promote educational, preventive and awareness-raising strategies through the organisation and development of the “Vitoria‐Gasteiz‐Ciudad Educadora” programme and the Beldur Barik strategy.
  • To link the Beldur Barik programme with the 25N campaign, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

To facilitate its development, the following activities are carried out:

  • Adapting the programme’s communication and dissemination tools;
  • Designing the programme’s communication campaign in coordination with the Equality Service;
  • Designing and managing the “Vitoria‐Gasteiz Ciudad Educadora” programme;
  • Organising and managing the Beldur Barik competition at local level, in coordination with its organisation at the level of the Basque Country Autonomous Community;
  • Incorporating and coordinating, within the gender violence prevention programme aimed mainly at young people, the Beldur Barik framework and the Escuela de Empoderamiento Femenino, especially the Laboratorio de Arte Urbano.
  • Creating a communication and dissemination strategy for the programme.

Beldur Barik means “Without Fear”. The Beldur Barik attitude is based on respect, freedom, autonomy, shared responsibility and a firm rejection of violence. It is the attitude that shows a personal and collective commitment to reversing and confronting the manifestations of sexist culture and sexist violence; in other words, the attitude that is not afraid to stand up to (and even stop) these situations of inequality and/or sexism.
