The Health and Community Foundation (FSC) is helping to organise this initiative alongside other social organisations and institutions specialising in social and health care. The Department of Social Work and Social Services, the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Institute of Creativity and Educational Innovations of the Universitat de València are also collaborating. The census will take place on 17 November and aims to contribute to a more accurate understanding of homelessness in the city of Valencia and to give public authorities and social organisations useful information for planning action tailored to the needs of those affected.
On 17 November, the night-time census of people experiencing homelessness will take place, with the aim of improving knowledge of the number of people affected, their characteristics and their needs in the city of Valencia.
FSC is one of the organisations involved in organising and carrying out the count, and has taken part in all four editions since 2019.
The Low-Threshold Intervention Centre (CIBE) in Valencia and the Centre de Nit Refugi (night centre), both run and managed by FSC, stress the importance of this initiative in giving visibility to people experiencing homelessness and getting closer to their reality.
They point out that these counts are carried out regularly at municipal, national and international level. They also emphasise that the census provides a picture of the situation of people experiencing homelessness on one particular night, a “snapshot” that offers a closer view of their everyday reality and of the circumstances they actually face.
To carry out the night-time count, the census organisers have opened registration for anyone interested in volunteering. The deadline is 5 November. Public participation will be essential in gathering information that gives a better understanding of homelessness in the city and helps to shape future social responses.
To take part as a volunteer, you must be between 18 and 71 years old, be available on the night of the census, from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m., and attend a training session. Registered volunteers will receive their training ahead of the census in the Main Hall of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the Universitat de València (Avenida dels Tarongers, 4b, Valencia). Depending on the group assigned during the registration process, each registered volunteer must attend the training on the day and at the time allocated to them. The training will last two hours.
The details provided by those registering will be used to organise the volunteer teams, arrange the accident insurance planned for the night of the count and communicate any organisational changes that may affect participants.
