Socio-educational and sports activity servicein prisons

The Prison Activity Service operates in several prisons in Catalonia and is organised through collaboration with third sector organisations.

The aim is to energise prisons and provide them with professional support during the summer period in order to guarantee intervention. The activity service reinforces the functioning of the prisons for approximately 3 months, which allows greater intervention with the people in the centres.

Fundación Salud y Comunidad has taken part since the year the service was created (2016), when the design work and the establishment of operating procedures were carried out.

The intervention has a twofold dimension: socio-educational and sports. Accordingly, the activities in the centres are carried out by professionals trained in social disciplines and in sports coaching.

The tasks carried out in each of the prisons are:

• Design and development of activities in the prison.
• Cultural and sports activities.
• Support for the prison’s treatment teams.
• Support for inmates’ reintegration processes, in accordance with their individual treatment programme.
• Responding to inmates’ requests (changes of schedule, answering questions about how the centre works, managing incidents, etc.).
• Support for the work of the prison’s social educator/sports educator.
