Dependent unit for training, supportand social and labour inclusion for the prison population "Barcino"

The Dependent Units are residences located in a community setting for people classified in the third prison grade (open regime). Their name indicates that they are functionally dependent on the Prison Administration.

The Barcino Dependent Unit is the only unit specialising in supporting people who have committed violent offences, and who present a medium or high risk of reoffending, which calls for high-intensity professional intervention in the final stage of their sentence with the aim of detecting and reducing the rate of reoffending.

The Unit has capacity for 15 people and a further 3 in a follow-up programme in the Barcelonès county. We carry out a comprehensive approach with personalised pathways through specific therapeutic groups on relapse prevention and on addressing violent offences, groups preparing for release from prison, and employment inclusion and social promotion workshops, tailored to the needs and life stage of each of the people served.

Together with the support and involvement of the Departament de Justícia, at UD Barcino we jointly design the various actions to promote people’s autonomy and gradual deinstitutionalisation, and we facilitate their social and community participation, encouraging them, as far as possible, to stay close to their place of residence or work so that they can reconcile their family life with serving their sentence.
