The 70 kilometres walked along the Way of St James (Camino de Santiago) have given the adolescents at the \u201cVerdader 1\u201d General Residential Care Home an opportunity to live together, push their limits and learn. The home, a residential care service within the Valencian Community’s child protection system, is located in the province of Alicante and managed by the Health and Community Foundation (FSC). Along the route, they were able to discover new places, take on personal and group challenges, and strengthen the bonds within the group.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This year, they set out from Palas de Rey, in the province of Lugo, and made their way to Santiago de Compostela, completing a total of 70 kilometres in four days. The trip was full of laughter, effort, togetherness and shared moments.<\/p>\n

Throughout the different stages, the participants had the opportunity to step out of their routine, enjoy nature, see new places and discover their own abilities, overcoming together the challenges that arose along the way.<\/p>\n

Beyond the route itself, this experience has been a chance to learn from one another, strengthen relationships and create memories that will stay with them all. For some of the teenagers, the trip also brought first-time experiences, such as flying on a plane or trying Galician cuisine, with octopus taking pride of place.<\/p>\n

The participants themselves also highlight the beauty of the landscapes, the forests, the cosy accommodation and the villages they came across. Although some stages, especially the one from Melide to Arz\u00faa, were tougher because of their hills and steep gradients, the effort was worth it. One of the most special moments was arriving at Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, an ending full of emotion and satisfaction after completing the route.<\/p>\n

They also value the chance to switch off from their mobile phones, enjoy the present and pay attention to the little things that so often go unnoticed in everyday life. Walking through natural landscapes, discovering new places, chatting along the way and enjoying every moment allowed them to live the experience differently, connecting more with their surroundings and with the people around them.<\/p>\n

Educators Julia and Laura, who work at the \u201cVerdader 1\u201d General Residential Care Home, speak very highly of the experience: \u201cAs educators, we can say that it has been a pleasure to enjoy this experience with them, because being able to share moments away from the routine allows us to get to know each other better and to build a closer bond and memories that we will always carry with us.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 2026 Way of St James walk was much more than a 70-kilometre route. This experience reflects FSC’s commitment to the wellbeing of adolescents, creating opportunities for community living, learning and personal growth that foster their autonomy, the development of social skills and the strengthening of emotional bonds. It was a shared adventure from which everyone returned with new lessons, unforgettable memories and the satisfaction of having reached the finish together.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
